The monumental role of social media in everything: Socialnomics

This video does an excellent job encapsulating the monumental role that social media plays in business, education, and organizations.

"You can't buy attention anymore. Having a huge budget doesn't mean anything in social media...The old media paradigm was PAY to PLAY. Now you get back what you authentically put in. You've got to be willing to PLAY to PLAY." - Alex Bogusky, Co-Chairman, CP&B

"The head of social media is the customer" - McDonalds

Having just read Vaynerchuk's book ("Crush It: Why Now is the Time to Cash in your Passion"), I have to say I agree with the ideas in this video.

Social networking ties in excellently with online learning; the whole aspect of transferring information from one person to another is the impetus of social networking, as it should be with online learning.

What I'd like to see is a social networking site dedicated to online learning. LMS systems aside, there isn't really a "Facebook of Learning."

Does BGSU use its own learning platform for teaching courses, or something like WebCT/Blackboard?

Hi Dustin,
I think Ning.com enables the kind of social learning environment you are talking about. Ning enables anyone to create a social network. Think "facebook in a box." I noticed you are using Wordpress to facilitate online learning and I think that is really great. Wordpress is an amazingly powerful platform. You can see how we implemented Wordpress at BGSU by going to http://blogs.bgsu.edu. The blogs are a nice addition to our learning ecosystem at BGSU. We currently use Blackboard as our enterprise LMS but use many other technologies alongside blackboard such as Ning, Jing, Twitter, Screenr, Blogs, and others. Our Educational Technologists/Instructional Designers assist faculty in developing rich online learning environments that may include any combination of those tools. Check out Ning and let me know what you think about it. I created a Ning community for people interested in online learning so please feel free to join - http://onlineteaching.ning.com/
